Verbs - Los Verbos

There are SEVEN simple verb tenses – we will concentrate only on present,

and preterit which is a tense that expresses an action that was completed at some time in the past.

Subject Pronouns

yo	I	nosotros nosotras	we (masculine and both) we (feminine)
tú	you (familiar)
Usted	you (formal)
El Ella	he she	ustedes ellos ellas	they (masculine and both) they (masculine and both) they (feminine)

Present Tense Verbs

Present AR verbs
Drop the AR ending and add:

Yo	-o (hablo)	Nosotros/as	-amos (hablamos)
Tu-	-as (hablas)
Usted El ella	-a (habla)	Ustedes Ellos ellas	-an (hablan)

Present ER verbs
Drop the ER ending and add:

Yo	-o (como)	Nosotros/as	- Emos (comemos)
tu	-es (comes)
Usted El ella	-e (come)	Ustedes Ellos ellas	-en (comen

Present IR verbs
Drop the IR ending and add:

Yo	-o (vivo)	Nosotros/as	-imos (comimos)
tu	-es (vives)
Usted El ella	-e (vive)	Ustedes Ellos ellas	-en (comen)

Preterit (past) AR verbs
Preterit AR verbs - Drop the AR ending and add:

Yo	-e (hable)	Nosotros/as	-amos (hablamos)
Tu-	-aste (hablaste)
Usted El ella	-o(hablo)	Ustedes Ellos ellas	-aron (hablaron)

Preterit ER verbs - Drop the ER and IR endings and add:

Yo	-i (comi)	Nosotros/as	- imos (comimos)
tu	-iste (comiste)
Usted El ella	-io (comio)	Ustedes Ellos ellas	-ieron (comieron)

Formation of present participle…ing words (general rule – of course there are some exceptions)
Drop the ar of an –ar ending verb, like caminar, and add ANDO = caminando
Drop the er of an –er ending verb, like comer, and add IENDO = comiendo
Drop the ir of an –ir ver, like decider, and add IENDO = decidiendo

Tener que…to have to…
The phrase tener que + (infinitive) expresses a need or obligation to do something
Tengo que comer algo porque tengo mucha hambre.

Tengo que viajar
Tengo que conocer
Tengo que irme

Quiero...I want...
quiero + (infinitive) expresses your desires or wants
Quiero caminar al museo.
Quiero comer carne con ensalada por la cena.
Quiero ir al cine para ver la película.
